Students Create Spectacular Poppy Display for WW1 Centenary
A breath-taking display of poppies, created to mark the centenary of the end of World War One, has been unveiled at The Galleries Shopping Centre.
Created by art students from Wigan & Leigh College, 100 poppies, one to represent each year that has passed since the end of The Great War, have been suspended from the ceiling of Makinson Arcade in Wigan town centre.
The display, a collaboration between The Galleries Shopping Centre, Wigan Council and Wigan and Leigh College, was unveiled by The Mayor of Wigan Borough, Councillor Sue Greensmith, at an event held in the shopping arcade on Thursday 1st November. Representatives from Wigan Council and the college were also in attendance.
Victoria Nichol, our Centre Manager, said: “The poppies that the students have created are fantastic and we are really proud to be involved with this project. The centenary of WW1 is something that we felt we needed to mark, remembering the many lives lost and the tremendous sacrifice made by so many. This display is designed to capture the attention of the public, encouraging them to stop and remember those that fought so bravely for this country.”
Leader of Wigan Council, Councillor David Molyneux said: “Recognising the ultimate sacrifice made by those in wars recent and old is something I’m passionate about and this year’s Remembrance activities are especially poignant with 2018 marking 100 years since the end of World War One.I commend the young students who created the poppies as they have done a fantastic job. The display is a show of solidarity and is a great demonstration of working together with the local college and businesses to create something meaningful. The poppies will complement the further armed forces related displays that will be installed in the town centre ahead of Remembrance Day.”
