We’re Shoppin’ In The Rain
You may notice something a little different at The Galleries next time you visit. Members of the public will be shoppin’ in the rain, as they stroll through Makinson Arcade! The newest addition to the centre includes 142 colourful umbrellas suspended from the ceiling, which are sure to brighten up any shopping experience.
The Umbrella Sky Project was inspired by the Ágitagueda Art Festival held annually in the beautiful streets of Águeda in Portugal. As part of the festival, hundreds of umbrellas are suspended from almost invisible wires over the promenades for tourists to enjoy.
Victoria Nichol, our Centre Manager said: “We are delighted to be hosting such an exciting project and it’s a great addition that everyone can enjoy as they shop. The pops of colour really add a special something to the Arcade and we’ve already had some amazing feedback from the Wigan townspeople, so much so we’ve decided to keep the installation until October, allowing as many people as possible to enjoy it.”
To celebrate the installation, shoppers can also pick up a postcard from either of Makinson Arcade’s entrances and the person who sends it the farthest distance – photographic proof is needed! – will win a shopping spree at the Arcade to the value of £150.
People can visit the Makinson Arcade from 9am – 5.30pm Monday to Saturday, and 11am – 5pm on Sundays.
